Our Story

The Derby Bosnia Herzegovina Community Association (DBHCA) was founded in 1995 to support refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider Former Yugoslavia.

What began as a community-driven effort to help Bosnians with housing, welfare, and training has grown into a vital resource for refugees and asylum seekers from across the globe. Over the years, we have expanded our services to include cultural events, educational programs, and outreach for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and disabled.

Our purpose-built community centre serves as a welcoming space, and with the dedication of over 40 volunteers, we continue to empower individuals and families to build new lives in the UK.

Join our dedicated team of volunteers providing vital advice and support to refugees, asylum seekers, and vulnerable individuals. Whether assisting with housing, welfare benefits, or immigration guidance, you’ll play a crucial role in helping people navigate complex systems and build more secure futures. Your compassion and problem-solving skills can make a real difference in someone’s life.

Help reduce isolation and improve well-being by volunteering in our outreach program. You’ll visit elderly community members, those with mobility issues, and isolated families, providing practical assistance and much-needed companionship. If you’re passionate about creating meaningful connections, this role is a rewarding way to give back.

Bridge the communication gap by volunteering as an interpreter for our multilingual community. Your language skills can help refugees and asylum seekers access essential services, from healthcare and education to legal and housing support. Join us in ensuring that no one is left unheard.

Be part of something special by volunteering at our community events! Help organise cultural celebrations, social gatherings, and other events that bring people together. Whether behind the scenes or interacting with attendees, your support will create memorable experiences while fostering a sense of belonging and cultural pride.

Support our work behind the scenes by volunteering in administration. From managing calls and schedules to assisting with data entry and office tasks, your organizational skills will help us run smoothly and stay connected with those who need us most. Join our friendly team and be the heart of our operations!

Share your knowledge and inspire learning by volunteering as a teacher or trainer. Help refugees and migrants build skills through ESOL classes, IT workshops, and employability sessions. Your guidance can empower individuals to gain independence, confidence, and a brighter future.
